Peggy Kaplan

2012 Balkan Dreaming

Značajne institucije koje su izlagale njezine fotografije su Pompidou Centar u Parizu, The Lincoln Center Museum of the Performing Arts u New Yorku i Riverside Studios u Londonu. Radovi joj se nalaze u fundusima renomiranih njujorških muzeja The Museum of Modern Art i Metropolitan Museum.

Peggy Jarrell Kaplan, a photographer from New York, portrays performing artists who push boundaries to explore new dance forms, and her images of well-known but also emerging artists, have been attracting attention for several decades. At Perforations, she will present an exhibition with which she wants to describe a particular atmosphere and dreamy mentality, which she identifies as Balkan Dreaming. Working within the tradition of black and white classical portraiture, Kaplan’s approach conveys the qualities of dance separate from its performance. Kaplan sees the photographic studio as a small stage that questions how much of a portrait is a performance, and the relevance of sincerity in our digital age.

The photographs in the exhibition, taken primarily in New York between 1994 and 2011, include the following performing artists: Galina Borissova and Ivo Dimchev from Bulgaria; Nikolina Bujas-Pristaš, Pravdan Devlahović, Matija Ferlin, Ivana Müller and Borut Šeparović from Croatia; Maria Hassabi from  Greece; Mihaela Dancs, Paul Dunca, Manuel Pelmus, Ioana Popvici and Cosmin Manolescu from Romania; Saša Asentić, Dalija Acin and Dragana Bulut from Serbia; Maja Delak, Iztok Kovač, Matjaž Pograjc and Tadej Brdnik from Slovenia.

Peggy Jarrell Kaplan has been photographing visual and performing artists from the international avant-garde arts community since 1977, from international art icons to portraits of underground artists of the Soviet era. She has exhibited at a number of international dance festivals, including Berlin Tanz-im-August, the Dublin Dance Festival, the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival, the Holland Festival, and the 2004 Pina Bausch Festival in Düsseldorf.  Notable institutions that have exhibited her work include the Pompidou Centre in Paris; The Lincoln Centre Museum of the Performing Arts in New York; and Riverside Studios in London.  Her work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
