Janez Janša

2012 Tko je sljedeći? Who is next?

Performans otvara pitanja odgovornosti individue u suvremenom društvu recesije, šoka, predostrožnosti, nesigurnosti i indiferentnosti. Tko će preuzeti odgovornost i poduzeti nešto – tko će pritom ići do kraja? Je li nasilje jedino rješenje? Performans otvara ovo pitanje kombinirajući dokumentaristički i fikcionalni pristup.

This performance raises questions about the responsibility of the individual in this contemporary society of recession, shock, precautions, insecurity and indifference. What kind of performance can encourage change? Is democracy just an empty ritual of endless conversations that lead nowhere? Who will take responsibility and do something – who will take that something to the end? Is violence the only solution? This performance opens up these questions, combining a documentary and fictional approach.  It consists of film, music and choreography, creating a space in which many names and many characters negotiate potential action. Starting from the premise that it is beyond question that something needs to be done, the artist raises the possibility of the theatre as the scene of these changes.

Janez Janša (born Emil Hrvatin) is one of the three contemporary artists who, in 2007, changed their names to Janez Janša, after the Slovenian politician. He studied sociology and theatre direction at the University of Ljubljana and performance theory at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. His work includes visual and multimedia art, and performances which are often about the status of performance art in neo-liberal societies. He has published a series of essays about contemporary theatre and fine art, including a book about Flemish artist and theatre maker, Jan Fabre. From 1999 to 2006 he was the editor in chief of the performance art journal Maska. Since 1999 Janša has been the director of Maska, the non-profit organisation for publishing, production and education, based in Ljubljana, and he regularly holds interdisciplinary workshops throughout Europe and the USA.
